un ordinateur / une ordinateur ?

A language instructor was explaining to her class that French nouns, unlike their English counterparts, are gramatically designated as masculine or feminin. Things like "chalk" or "pencil," she described, "would have a gender association although in English these words are neutral". Puzzled, one student raised his hand and asked, "which gender is a computer?"

The teacher wasn't certain which it was, and so divided the class into 2 groups (male & female) and asked them to decide whether a computer should be masculine or feminin. Both groups were asked to give 4 reasons for their recommendation.

The men decided that computers should definitely be reffered to the feminin gender because:

• No one but their creator understands their internal logic.
• The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to anyone else.
• Even your smallest mistakes are stored in the long-term memory for later retrieval.
• As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending 1/2 your paycheck on accessories for it.

The women, however, concluded that computers should be reffered to the masculin gender because:

• In order to get their attention, you have to turn them on.
• They have a lot of data but are still clueless.
• They are supposed to help you save your problems, but 1/2 the time they are the problem.
• As soon as you commit to one, you realise that if you had waited a little bit longer-- you could've gotten a better model.
